Stop Doubting Your Greatness

By: Michele Tarter

After conversing with my chiropractor during an appointment, he suggested a book for me to read. We had talked about my job as a nurse and my trepidation about an upcoming merger. At one point, I joked about my lack of social skills. We even discussed the craziness of this world and recent social and political issues that make us feel powerless and out of control. The book was called You Are a Bada$$-How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero. I took his suggestion to mean that maybe I needed to look at myself differently and feel more empowered to be the best version of myself, or, in other words, stop doubting my greatness.

The book offers real steps to take and inspiring stories that lead you to find your purpose, passion, and gifts (she even lists other books as resources to help you find these), be open to discover how to get there, and realize what things are keeping you from the awesome life you desire. It offers ideas to help you “tap into what brings you joy” rather than just getting by or settling for mediocrity.  My copy is now highlighted and marked up with all the quotations and empowering words that are encouraging us to share our unique and valuable gifts with the world, develop a powerful attitude, and take decisive action to be, what the author calls, the “biggest and best version of ourselves”.

Whatever your desired life looks like, the author often challenges you to love yourself. She pushes you towards appreciating your gifts and talents, while pushing you away from self-sabotaging false beliefs that can leave you acting like a victim. The author encourages us to connect with our preferred Source Energy for power and direction, which she often refers to as the Universe. For me, I will not open my mind to just any power, but I know I can trust in God as that power source in the steps she lays out.

Meditation is encouraged to “quiet your mind of chatter so you can connect to your Source Energy”.  The author wants you to keep your head in a positive space by “surrounding yourself with people who think the way you want to think”, being generous, being full of gratitude and faith, forgiving (for yourself and others), and investing in yourself.  Many, but not all, of the author’s challenges include biblical values that can be applied to make positive changes in what may feel like a mediocre life. These points are just touching the surface of her encouraging book that wants you to seek a joyful life filled with awesomeness.
