Paws Off: Surprising Human Snacks That Can Harm Your Dog
By J.L. Novak
Kids often love to share their snacks with their dogs, thinking, “If I can eat it, so can they!” However, not all human foods are safe for dogs. Some can even lead to doggy disasters. Knowing which treats are not dog-approved is important, so here’s a handy guide to help keep your furry friends safe and healthy.
Definite No-Nos
The following foods should never be given to dogs under any circumstances, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration:
- Chocolate: All chocolate is harmful to dogs, and the darker it is, the more dangerous it can be. Even a small amount can lead to serious health issues.
- Grapes and raisins: These seemingly innocent fruits can cause major kidney damage in dogs. All types of grapes should be avoided, whether they’re seedless, peeled, fresh, or dried.
- Macadamia nuts: These are known to be toxic to dogs, so it’s best to avoid feeding Fido any human foods that might contain these nuts.
- Salty snacks: While eating a single potato chip or pretzel may not do any harm, large quantities can lead to illness and excessive thirst.
- Sugar-free candy and gum: Many sugar-free or low-sugar products contain the artificial sweetener xylitol, which can be harmful to a dog’s liver.
Proceed with Caution
Some foods, while not exactly toxic, can still cause digestive issues. Avoid giving dogs avocados, citrus, onions, garlic, chives, and bread dough, which can all upset their stomach.
General Tips
When in doubt, stick to dog-specific treats and foods recommended by your veterinarian. If you suspect your dog has eaten something unsafe, contact your vet right away. By recognizing harmful foods and keeping them out of paw’s reach, you can help ensure a happy life for your four-legged friend.
