Libraries: A Haven for Single Parents and Kids

By J.L. Novak

Finding affordable and enriching activities for children isn’t easy. Fortunately, public libraries provide a ton of free resources and activities for the whole family. Here’s a look at just some of the things you can do and borrow from the Louisville Free Public Library (LFPL) system:

For Kids and Teens:

Fun Activities

  • Storytimes: Attend age-appropriate story readings at various library branches.
  • 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge: Join this program to build early reading skills.
  • Telescopes: Check out a telescope from a participating library and gaze up at the stars.

Digital Resources

  • eBooks and Databases: Access a wide range of digital materials (ebooks and magazines, comics, streaming movies and music).

Special Programs

  • Maker Spaces: Some libraries offer creative spaces with a variety of equipment like 3D printers, laser cutters, sewing machines, art supplies, musical instruments, and more.

Educational Resources

  • Homework Help: Access free online tutoring services.
  • ACT Prep: Take advantage of free ACT preparation classes and programs.
  • Summer Reading Program: Participate in the annual 10-week program to prevent summer learning loss.

For Parents:

Technology

  • Computer and Internet: Access the internet on computer workstations or connect to Wi-Fi from your own device.

Adult Education

  • MyLibraryU: Take short courses taught by university professors and field experts.
  • Online Learning: Access platforms like LinkedIn Learning, Treehouse, and Transparent Language for professional development and personal growth.

Job Seeker Resources

  • Resume Help: Get assistance with job searches and resume writing.

Immigrant Services

  • English Language Learning: Access ELL/ESL materials and participate in conversation groups.
  • Multilingual Resources: Borrow books and movies in more than 80 languages.

Public libraries offer more than just books. By taking advantage of all of their offerings, you can enrich your child’s education, find support for your own growth, and enjoy quality family time – all at little to no cost.
