A Few Words of Encouragement for New Parents

By Dani D. Anderson

As a mother of two, under 4 years of age, I still consider myself a fairly new parent. Recently however, I found myself reflecting on the very early days of motherhood, when my first born was just weeks old. I remember looking at the blessing I held in my hands wondering “How am I going to do this?”, “Will I be any good at it?”, “Wait a minute, did I just have a baby?!”. It’s safe to say that I was in a bit of shock the moment it all hit me.

In the weeks and months that followed, as I settled into my new role, I felt an incredible amount of pressure to get everything right and often wondered if I was doing enough. To top it off, the sleepless nights and upside-down days often made me feel like I was living in a different time zone from everyone else. I was thankful however, for the family and friends who reached out, whether to check on me, or to offer words of advice or encouragement. They had no idea how much of an impact they had on my experience at the time. I felt a sense of community and I was grateful for my community.

I often thought of new mothers and fathers who might not feel a sense of community during one of the most critical transitions one might face in life. It is my hope that at some point, you will find it. In the meantime, I’d like to share a few words of encouragement, and I hope that you will receive it.

For starters, congratulations! You’re going to enjoy this ride (most days at least).

You can do this and you’re already off to a great start!

If you ever find yourself wondering whether you’re doing enough, chances are, you are!

Someone thinks the world of you!

(And I imagine that the more seasoned parents might encourage you to enjoy that while it lasts.)

I hope that you are currently or will feel inspired to enjoy every moment of this time because it sure flies by!

Try not to worry too much about being perfect because to your child, you already are!
