DEALING WITH MENTAL HEALTH? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

By: Phuong Nguyen

Mental health has been an issue that affects many people. While it is widely discussed, it is not always addressed in the right ways. Even worse, some people avoid talking about mental health because they either do not want to disrupt others’ lives or fear appearing weak in front of friends and family.

The truth is, that mental health struggles can affect anyone. It does not define whether someone is “strong” or “weak.” These challenges often stem from negative thoughts building up over time, eventually impacting daily life. Here are some ways to help manage mental health issues:

  • Healing: Like physical pain, mental pain or trauma takes time to heal. You need to be patient with yourself. The first step is recognizing the thoughts that are weighing you down and identifying their root cause to address the issue. Healing is a process, and patience is key!
  • Temporarily distancing yourself from negativity: Time and space can help. Sometimes it’s best to take a step back from friends, family, or coworkers who may be triggering negative emotions. This doesn’t mean avoiding or resenting them but giving yourself time to cool down and reflect for future reconciliation.
  • Communicating: Keeping your thoughts and feelings bottled up will not help. Share what you’re going through with someone you trust—a parent, relative, close friend, coworker, or sibling. If someone you love is struggling, approach them with care and encourage open, supportive conversations.
  • Taking a break from social media: While social media connects us with others, it can also make us feel disconnected from ourselves. Comparing your life to curated, polished images online can be damaging. Remember, you never truly know someone’s full story just by looking at their highlight reel.
  • Listening to soothing music: Throughout history, music has been used to heal. Soothing and uplifting melodies can significantly improve your mental health. Take time to relax, close your eyes, and enjoy music that brings peace. Revisit songs from your childhood to spark happy memories.
  • Disciplining your thoughts: Our minds often wander into negative spaces. We might imagine worst-case scenarios or create false realities based on partial information. Whenever bad thoughts arise, remind yourself they are not yours to own. Start taking control of your mind. Recognize where negative thoughts come from and redirect them toward hope and solutions.

There are still good people out there willing to connect and help you through tough times. Save uplifting quotes on your phone or computer to remind yourself that things will work out in the best way.

Sometimes life doesn’t unfold as we hope, but how we respond defines who we are. While it’s easier said than done, overcoming challenges will bring growth and strength. Everything happens for a reason, and each new season brings opportunities for reflection and renewal. Let’s move forward with positivity and wish everyone a hopeful, meaningful time ahead!
